Hor and Raina and Raina's mummy
Raina, a five year old girl, is in the post-telegraphic stage of linguistic development. The transcript provided is of a conversation between her and her mother, where they are walking through the countryside and Raina is observing her surroundings. Her post-telegraphic stage features are seen through her ability to hold a conversation with her mother, and the ability to exhibit turn-taking techniques that are used in conversations. Additionally, signs of further social development can be seen in Raina’s young age. One instance where this can be seen is when Raina tells her mother; “LOOK (1) theres one,” after her mother tells her that she missed the butterfly. This shows her cognitive development and ability to observe her surroundings.
It should be noted that these observations that Raina is making of her surroundings show that she has likely never experienced an environment like this one. This would be the likely explanation as to why she is asking her mother many questions about her surroundings. For example, Raina asks her mother to go into a new area; “can we go in this field [down arrow].” When she is told that they can’t she questions ‘why’ twice. Because her mother tells her that the grass is too long, Raina begins to understand why she cannot go in the field, and in turn gains a better understanding of the environment around her.
As previously mentioned, Raina is able to exhibit turn-taking techniques within the conversation between her and her mother. For being just five years old, Raina does a seemingly great job at this, which further shows that she is in the post-telegraphic stage of linguistic development. For the greater majority of the conversation, Raina was able to remain patient and respectful when her mother was talking. However, there were some instances in which both Raina and her mother overlapped each other. With that being said, they were not instances of overlapping resulting from conflict, rather they resulted from excitement. An example of this can be seen when Raina and her mother are discussing the bird in the tree;
“do you think theres a lot of little birdies in there
//
oh YES”
This shows that although Raina is likely developing at a faster rate for her young age, she still has some development left in terms of overlapping other’s sentences.
It can also be said that for her young age, Raina has a decent understanding that some words come with many meanings, which is not common among children her age. An example of this can be seen when Raina tells her mother that the bird is “only a little one.” In this particular instance, ‘one’ is being used to describe the little bird in a more charismatic way. As we know, ‘one’ can also refer to a singular object. Furthermore, Raina has shown that she can distinguish the meaning of similar-sounding words, such as ‘see’ and ‘sea.’ This can be seen when she tells her mother that she “can see the sea.” For being only five years old, Raina is showing that she is a bit more advanced than others in the same age group, as she has the ability to distinguish different features of different words.
It can be concluded that Raina’s linguistic development can be accredited to Noam Chomsky’s Language Acquisition Device (LAD) that was curated in 1965. Chomsky stated that the human brain is born with knowledge of what makes a human language, and that universal grammar is also known. Though it cannot be ‘tapped into’ until a child begins to gain a deeper understanding of the world around them, it is something that Chomsky argues is known globally. This relates to Raina because of her actions that are seen as she travels through the new environment that is analyzed in the transcript. Here, Raina learns more about nature, more specifically of the long grass or birds in the area. This shows that Raina is still an active learner, and will likely continue to be one for a while.
Additionally, it can be said that Raina’s linguistic development can be accredited to Jerome Bruner’s Language Acquisition Support System (LASS), which was curated in 1983. Bruner argues that children have the innate ability to learn and acquire language, but that it also requires interaction with other users of the same language to excel their learnings. Essentially, children will learn, but will learn even more through interaction with others. Raina’s deeper understanding of the new environment around her is due in part to her mother’s assistance. Through her interactions with her mother, and questions about certain aspects of her surroundings, Raina is able to further understand why, how, and what.
AO1: ⅗ marks
ReplyDeleteYou show a clear understanding of the context provided in the transcript as you use short quotes to support your explanations. In the beginning, you describe the purpose of the transcript which shows your understanding of the conversation. At times you talk too much about the context and repeat yourself. For instance, you mention how Raina is ‘five years old’ more than twice and that she is in the ‘post-telegraphic stage’. After mentioning these things once or twice the audience already knows this information so you don’t have to mention it again. By being repetitive it shows the reader you are possibly just trying to reach the word count.
AO4: 9/15 marks
You show a clear understanding of linguistic methods, concepts, and approaches as you define them in your explanation. These are appropriate in this context as you clearly show the audience the connection between these theories and concepts with your explanation. However, to be more detailed in your understanding of linguistic features you could have used more buzzwords. For instance, at the very end of your analysis, you mention how the mother guides Raina in her language development. Following this, you could have described the buzzword ‘caretaker language’. Which is the guidance of an adult in a child or infant's language development as you explained. In your second paragraph you mention ‘[downward arrow]’ and the word ‘WHY’. Instead of ending your explanation by talking about the environment, you could’ve created extended paragraphs that explain what the downward intonations mean and why the word ‘WHY’ is in all caps. Then relate this to the audience.
AO5: ⅘ marks
You use many different selections of quotes and examples from the text. However, in your last two paragraphs, you don’t quote the text to strengthen your explanations. You do a great job explaining the theories but to quote would make your analysis selection more sophisticated.

AO1 - 3 marks: The understanding of the text is very detailed, which is shown through your elaborations of your points. But, there could be more reference to characteristic features of the transcript. For example, In your final two paragraphs about LAD and LASS, there are no specific examples given from the transcript to support your points. The explanations were great and very detailed, just putting in the quotes would make it that much stronger.
ReplyDeleteAO4 - 10 marks: You mentioned a wide variety of linguistic issues, methods and approaches, the use of concepts of labeling some of your explanations of the features just could have been improved. For example, your explanation of Raina being in a new environment and ‘asking her mother many questions about her surroundings’ is very elaborate and even includes quotes to support it. It just could have been stronger by labeling it with the exact concept/method that this falls under (Halliday’s heuristic function from his 7 functions of language). Another example is when you talked about being able to distinguish between ‘similar sounding words’ and gave ‘see’ and ‘sea’ as an example. Hor these are homophones. Your explanations show great understanding, it's just that you need to label them. BUZZWORDS HOR!!
AO5 - 3 marks: Clear synthesis of language data is shown. For example, your last paragraph talks about LASS and discovering/questioning. Like said above, just label it correctly.

Hi Jorge,
ReplyDeleteFor your AO1, you received 3 marks with having a clear understanding of the text with mentioning the meaning, context, and audience. Then with having clear references to characteristic features with the turn-taking technique, explaining it is pretty well done.
For your AO4, you received 8 marks for doing a great job on discussing the linguistic features. Using one of the theories to prove your point being the Language Acquisition Device(LAD) which shows a good use of using a theory. However, you could use more buzz words as there is a lack of buzzwords in your response.
Four your AO5, you received 4 marks with quotes and examples from the text to prove your points. Since for every point you made, it was detailed which demonstrated that you are able to prove your points with quotes and explain it great.

Hey Hor,
ReplyDeleteAO1: 3/5
Throughout your writing you display a clear understanding and you use short quotes to back up your reasoning. You seem a bit repetitive because you mention the age of Raina several times and repeat ‘post-telegraphic stage’ several times. Once you inform the reader once about some of this information, there is no need to repeat it.
AO4:8/10
Your writing displays a clear understanding and appropriately refers to the linguistic methods, concepts and methods. In order for you to have scored higher, you would need to add some more buzzwords to describe Raina's language development. Overall, I think you could have gone into more detail and provided more evidence to back up your points.
AO5: 3 points.
To score a 4, you would need to have labeled and made it obvious when discussing the language data. If you do that, you would be at a 4 for AO5.
